England Under-21 defender CJ Egan-Riley has turned down a new contract at Burnley, joining Marseille on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old was named in the Championship team of the season after the Clarets had conceded just 16 goals in 46 games, a league record. The appeal of a Premier League campaign, and a "significant long-term contract" was insufficient for Burnley to hold onto the player.

Egan-Riley will join up with Les Olympiens after the Under-21 European Championship. He was on the bench for the Three Lions' 3-1 win opening game win over Czechia on Thursday.

Egan-Riley started his career with Manchester City's academy, earning his first professional appearances for the club in the 2021/22 season. After his move to Burnley, loan spells with Hibs and Jong PSV in the Netherlands followed. Last season was Egan-Riley's first extended run of games in the first team, appearing in 49 games across all competitions.
