According to The Liverpool Echo, the Reds are not in discussions with Adam Lallana in regards to a new contract.
What’s the story?
The 31-year-old has less than six months left on his current contract, and as such he will need to be offered a new deal rather quickly if the Anfield outfit want to keep him at the club.
No clues: Can you name the season these iconic Liverpool images belong to?
However, it seems that Jurgen Klopp and co are willing to let him depart, as they are not currently in talks with the former England international.
Like Sturridge and Moreno
Lallana has been in Merseyside for the last six years, joining from Southampton for £25m in 2014. Since then, he has gone on to make 175 appearances for the club in all competitions.
It is a decision that makes sense from the club’s hierarchy. After all, he has made just seven starts so far this campaign, and he is a bit-part player in Klopp’s squad. For someone who is not a regular, Lallana’s reported £110,000-a-week wage is awfully big – that is higher than the likes of Alisson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane.
The situation is comparable to those of Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge last year. The former made just five appearance in all competitions in the past campaign and, although the latter made 27 overall, he was far from his manager’s first-choice. However, they were costing the club £65,000 and £130,000-a-week respectively. In Sturridge’s case, only five players at Liverpool were earning more. Both of their deals were allowed to run out without extensions.

It makes little sense to spend such huge amounts on players who are not a big part of the future, even those who have been with the club for a considerable amount of time. Given they have been used to big wages in the past, it is unlikely that they will take pay-cuts to stay if they are not often included on the teamsheet. Make no doubt about it – this is the right call.
